COLLACITIONS
Abstract
Word combinations, also known as collocations, are an essential aspect of language use that helps to form natural and fluent speech. Collocations refer to the habitual combination of words that often occur together in a particular language. Understanding collocations is crucial for mastering any language, as it enhances fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. In English, certain words tend to "stick together" due to the way native speakers use them, making these combinations sound more natural. For example, in English, we say "make a decision" rather than "do a decision" or "strong coffee" instead of "powerful coffee." This study explores the nature of word combinations, their significance in language learning, and the role they play in both spoken and written communication. It also examines how collocations are acquired and how they can be effectively taught to second-language learners.
