MORPHOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND PATHOGENESIS MECHANISMS OF CLOSTRIDIUM BOTULINUM, THE CAUSATIVE AGENT OF BOTULISM

This article presents an overview of the morphological and cultural characteristics of Clostridium botulinum, the causative agent of botulism, as well as the main mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, based on an analysis of scientific literature. The article analyzes the specific features of the microorganism as a Gram-positive, spore-forming, and obligate anaerobic bacterium, its resistance to environmental factors, and its growth characteristics under laboratory conditions. In addition, the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis leading to the development of flaccid paralysis through the blockade of acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular synapse by botulinum neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum are described. The obtained analyses contribute to increasing the importance of microbiological knowledge in the early diagnosis of botulism, its prevention, and the protection of public health.
