Varicose veins of the esophagus (vascular channels that connect the portal venous and systemic venous blood flow) are formed as a result of portal hypertension, most often in the submucosa of the lower esophagus. Although varicose veins can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), it most often appears on a few centimeters of the distal esophagus with cirrhosis of the liver.
