Abstract

This article examines the environmental issues of radioactive waste in Central Asian countries, focusing on large uranium ore deposits that were the primary source of mineral resources for the extraction and processing of radioactive (uranium- and thorium-containing) ores in the former Soviet Union. The article also notes that waste from inactive uranium mining and processing plants, uranium mine tailings, storage facilities, and areas contaminated by nuclear weapons testing serve as sources of radioactive contamination. It also notes that the environmental issues associated with radioactive waste include not only the threat it poses to health and the environment, but also the significant resources required for its safe management.
