Abstract

. This article examines the emergence, development, and ideological essence of the Jadid movement in Turkestan within the context of Russian colonial domination. It argues that Jadidism should be understood not merely as an educational reform initiative but as a comprehensive enlightenment-based national awakening aimed at overcoming social, cultural, and political stagnation. Drawing on historical and theoretical analysis, the study highlights the Jadids’ commitment to peaceful reform through education, press, and cultural transformation, distinguishing their approach from armed resistance movements such as the Basmachi movement. The article further challenges Soviet-era interpretations that conflated Jadidism with violent opposition, demonstrating instead that Jadid ideology was rooted in humanism, intellectual renewal, and long-term national emancipation. By reassessing the historical role of Jadidism, the study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of early twentieth-century reformist thought in Central Asia.
