Abstract

Second language (L2) listening comprehension is a complex, multi-faceted cognitive process influenced by various cognitive mechanisms. This article aims to examine the cognitive processes involved in second language listening comprehension, including attention, memory, prediction, and bottom-up and top-down processing. Additionally, it explores how these processes interact to facilitate or hinder listening comprehension in L2 learners. The article also discusses how understanding these processes can inform language teaching strategies and materials designed to enhance listening skills in second language acquisition.
