Abstract

This article analyzes the scientific and practical significance of medical-genetic counseling in the prevention of hereditary diseases and its role in maintaining public health. The study examines the classification of hereditary pathologies—including monogenic, polygenic, and chromosomal diseases—and argues that prevention is significantly more effective and economically feasible than treatment. The authors highlight that medical-genetic counseling functions as a complex preventive process aimed at assessing genetic risks, explaining inheritance mechanisms, and supporting reproductive decision-making. The article concludes that integrating mandatory premarital counseling, expanding genetic education in medical institutions, and improving perinatal screening systems are essential strategies for forming a healthy generation and reducing the socio-economic burden of congenital anomalies.
