Abstract

This article examines Thomas Pynchon’s nonfiction prose as a coherent field of literary self-reflection that illuminates his understanding of authorship, creativity, and the writer’s role within modern sociocultural and economic contexts. Focusing on Pynchon’s reflections on Sloth, artistic idleness, and creative labor, the study traces how historical transformations in moral and cultural values intersect with changing attitudes toward writing as both vocation and profession. The article further explores Pynchon’s ironic critique of utilitarian approaches to art within capitalist society, as well as his defense of creative practices rooted in tradition, particularly in relation to the contested issue of plagiarism. By situating Pynchon’s nonfiction texts alongside patterns of his authorial behavior, the analysis reconstructs the writer’s multidimensional literary persona and demonstrates how his nonfiction functions as a metatext that mediates between aesthetic innovation, ethical concerns, and the institutional conditions of postmodern literature.
