This article analyzes the effects of viruses on the general nervous system, their neurotropic properties, and the mechanisms by which they enter nerve cells. It highlights that viruses can infect not only somatic cells but also nervous tissue, which leads to various disorders in the functioning of both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The article discusses the pathogenesis of major viruses causing neuroinfections — including poliovirus, rhabdovirus, herpes simplex virus, and cytomegalovirus — as well as their interactions with neurons and the peculiarities of the immune response. In addition, information is provided on chronic neurological diseases that may arise as a result of the long-term latent persistence of viruses in nervous tissue and their reactivation.
