Abstract

 This paper investigates the growing cybersecurity challenges emerging from the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT). With billions of interconnected sensors, devices, and systems forming complex digital ecosystems, the attack surface for cybercriminals is exponentially increasing. Traditional security mechanisms designed for centralized computing environments are insufficient for the heterogeneity, scale, and resource constraints inherent in IoT infrastructures. This study analyzes the core vulnerabilities associated with IoT devices including weak authentication, insecure communication protocols, poor device management, firmware vulnerabilities, and supply chain risks. Additionally, the paper explores the implications of IoT-based attacks such as botnets, privacy breaches, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and unauthorized device control. The research discusses existing and emerging defense mechanisms including lightweight encryption, network segmentation, zero-trust architectures, edge-based security, and machine learning–enabled anomaly detection. Findings indicate that while the IoT revolution offers unprecedented efficiency and automation, it also introduces severe security risks requiring robust governance, continuous monitoring, and standardized security frameworks.
