Abstract

The rise of social media platforms has transformed contemporary communication practices, fostering new modes of textual production and interaction. Among these, hashtags have become one of the most distinctive and influential elements of digital discourse. Initially introduced as simple indexing devices, hashtags have developed into multifunctional linguistic markers that structure online communication, signal social alignment, shape public narratives, and facilitate digital identity construction. In both Uzbek and English digital environments, hashtags operate as dynamic semiotic tools that organize discourse and perform complex pragmatic tasks. This theoretical article examines the nature, evolution, and linguopragmatic functions of hashtags in Uzbek and English digital discourse through a corpus-based perspective, focusing on their role in meaning-making, discourse structuring, and digital community formation.
